FLAT MARKER

A marker is also called a grass marker, level marker, or flat marker. A marker may be made of granite, bronze, or a combination. Markers are made in a variety of shapes. The marker is usually 2 feet x 1 foot for a single grave space or 4 feet x 1 foot for a double grave space. A marker may have a cutout or fitting for a flower vase.

A ledger is a full length piece of granite that provides a solid cover for the entire grave space. It may be polished or rock pitched on the sides. Core holes maybe cut into a ledger for flower vases. It may be topped by a bevel or slant marker which is used for the epitaph.
DIE OR UPRIGHT MEMORIAL

A die is the upright piece of the granite that is placed on a base. The die can be polished, steeled or sawed. Dies are measured by length x width x height in increments of 2 inches. A die can have an oval, serpentine, flat or other custom top.

A slant stone is typically made of granite. The face of the slant is an angle of about 60 degrees. The face is of the slant is usually polished while the sides and top are usually rock pitched though they be polished. A slant can be placed on a base.

A bevel marker could be thought of as a cross between a slant and a flat. It is a low marker, with a slightly tilted face. Typically there is an approximate 2" difference in height from front to rear of the face. A bevel marker can be completely polished or have rock pitched sides.

There are many different shapes, styles and sizes of headstones. Headstones can be shaped like boulders, rough slabs of granite, custom shaped, highly polished, partially polished, etched, etc. Almost any type of shape, style, and designed can be accomplished with today's computerized technology and customized cutting machinery. FINISHES
There are several types of finishes available for granite headstones. These
are the most frequently used ones.
POLISHED
The Polished finish is a highly reflective, mirror gloss finish. The full
color, depth and crystal structure of the stone is visible. A polished
finish seals surface pores and is, therefore, nearly impervious to weather
and chemical wear.
HONED
A smooth, satin surface without reflection, the Honed finish shows the
full color of the stone. It is produced on the same equipment as the
polished finishes; however, the honing process ends prior to the buffing
stage.
DIAMOND 8
Diamond 8 is a honed finish plus an additional process that enhances the
color and removes microscopic crystals that may leave a hazy appearance.
Recommended on darker granite colors.
DIAMOND 10
The Diamond 10 is a thermal finish with an added water jet treatment to
enhance the color and appearance of the stone. Highly recommended on
darker granite colors.
THERMAL
The Thermal finish is produced by applying a high-temperature flame to
the surface of the stone. This flame fractures crystals on the face,
leaving a rough-textured finish. Highly skid-resistant, this finish is
an excellent choice for walking surfaces.
GRANITE COLORS
Grave markers are most often made of granite. Granite is a popular
material because it's beautiful, strong, uneffected by weather, and will
last for hundreds of years. Granite comes in a wide variety of colors
and patterns.

CEMETERY RESTRICTIONS
Cemetery restrictions and regulations are an important factor in your choice
of monument. Some only allow bronze in granite, some allow only flats. A
cemetery may have a minimum and maximum size requirement. There may be
restrictions on setting and foundation of the memorial. Be sure to know
your cemetery's requirements before purchasing your memorial or marker.
